European egg prices turned firmer once the summer holidays ended. Over the past month caged eggs rose 10.7 percent on the Vesper Price Index, free range 8.3 percent, barn 6.4 percent and organic eggs 3.1 percent. Demand has come back across every housing system at once, and the processing industry still has substantial coverage to arrange for the winter baking season.

Supply has been slower to return. French losses from the June heatwave are put at 2.5 to 3 million birds, and by late August Poland had recorded fifty-two Newcastle disease outbreaks since January. Record imports are filling part of the gap left by declining cage production, while egg powders have barely moved over the month.

The autumn bird migration is now under way, and an avian influenza outbreak in commercial laying flocks is the risk the trade is pricing into the season. In our newly published Bakery Q4 2026 Market Outlook, our egg analyst Ralitsa Videnova weighs these forces against our AI forecast out to Q2 2027.
