Labby, a start-up formed in 2017 by two MIT researchers, Julia Somerdin and Anshuman Das, has launched Milkey, an optical scanning device and analytics platform that claims to give a diagnosis of cow health and herd performance with a simple scan of fresh milk from each cow in a process that takes less than 10 seconds. The process claims to eliminate dependence on samples being sent to labs, or third party specialists visiting the farm to test and analyse. The company says they can identify infections before they spread through the herd, and over the longer term create a health profile for each beast and the herd that can inform breeding and herd selection.
