Unusual weather patterns during February increased production risks across several major sugar regions, affecting both sugarbeet and sugarcane areas.
In Europe, large beet-growing regions experienced significant temperature and rainfall deviations. Northern France recorded rainfall more than double long-term averages in Hauts-de-France and Grand Est, while several areas in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland experienced markedly colder conditions.
In the Netherlands, temperatures in Groningen and Drenthe were more than 40% below average during the period. Polandโs key beet regions also saw unusually low temperatures combined with reduced precipitation.
Across the Atlantic, weather conditions in several major US beet-producing states showed notable departures from historical norms. Minnesota and North Dakota both recorded higher-than-average precipitation during winter conditions.
Sugarcane regions also saw significant weather shifts. Brazilโs main producing states, including Sรฃo Paulo and Minas Gerais, received substantially higher rainfall than normal, while temperatures remained slightly below average.
In Asia, rainfall deficits stood out in several large cane-producing areas. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra in India recorded sharply lower precipitation, while Chinaโs Guangxi and Yunnan provinces also saw significant rainfall shortfalls.
The scale of these deviations across multiple producing regions has increased weather-related uncertainty as the next stages of the growing season approach.
