Common questions

Commodity prices FAQ

How does Vesper source commodity prices?

Prices come from hundreds of independent sources: government agencies, futures exchanges, licensed data partners, and Vesper's own transaction-based research. Every price is traceable to its source, so you can stand behind it in a negotiation.

What is the difference between spot, forward, and futures prices?

A spot price is what the market pays today. A forward price is what buyers and sellers agree now for delivery later. A futures price is a standardised contract traded on an exchange. Vesper carries all three where they exist, so you can see the current price and where the market expects it to go.

Can I see historical commodity prices?

Yes. Every price series carries its full history, so you can chart where a price has been over months or years. That context is what lets you tell whether today's quote is high, low, or fair.

Which currencies and units are prices shown in?

Prices come in their native currency and unit, and you can convert to the currency and unit your team works in. That means no manual EUR/USD or per-tonne maths before you compare a quote.

How is this different from a commodity price index?

Individual prices tell you what one product costs in one place. A price index is a single representative benchmark built from many transactions. Vesper offers both: thousands of individual price series, plus the Vesper Price Index for dairy, vegetable oils, and sugar. See the commodity price index page for the benchmark.
