There is and has been a lot of price movement within the dairy market, pushed by sentiment, GDT events, and a bit of opportunism versus last-minute purchasing needs. For the most part, prices have definitely moved up, including most cheese prices. But where the previous price level already raised questions about their sustainability, the new price levels do so even more.

Some have confidence in the current price level for Gouda, while others have no confidence and are starting to see cracks already. At least everybody shares a certain level of uncertainty within their opinions caused by all of the movement that shook everybody up directly after their holidays.

All arguments regarding the fundamentals of the cheese market remain the same: production is okay, exports are weak, and consumption is stable at best. As this is nothing new, it seems like a matter of “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.”
