Latte Trento, who have been warning about soaring energy costs and the threat of milk shortages since January, say they no longer have enough raw material to produce fresh drinking milk or the hard cheese Trentingrana. The cheese was produced at Trento and at Pinzolo, which has now been closed. “Never before have we experienced such a range of causes, which have been going on for a year,” said Sergio Paoli, director of Latte Trento. Farms are stopping production, leading to a shortage of milk. “The state government had promised to intervene, but we have not received a single cent,” said Paoli. “With the closure of 20 farms, we are more than 15% short of milk.” Their own electricity bill has increased from €40,000 last year to €800,000.
