Following two years of exhaustive planning appeals, and judicial reviews the Glanbia / Royal A-Ware cheese plant at Belview, Co Kilkenny, finally broke ground this week. The plant which will produce 50,000 tonnes of continental-type cheeses from early in 2024 and will hoover up 450m litres of Irish milk production, each year. Initially proposed in 2019, the plant provoked huge opposition from environmentalists and the government’s An Taisce agency, prompting the lengthy trudge through the courts.
